Week 9

Week 9 was our concept presentations. ARCH1 volunteered to do the whole verbal presentation for the group. We all agreed on this quite happily as we had seen him present during our first presentation and could see he was quite confident with it. Other team members would have been thrilled by this as I know ARCH2 and IND1 aren't confident presenters. So this was good that we could have one person really skilled in this area to present or concept to the class.

RESULTS AND FEEDBACK

Grade: 5

I was a bit surprised we only got a 5. I thought our work was of a much higher standard. We got 5's for all criteria and one 6 for meeting requirements of the brief. This was quite a shock as we had worked really well as a team in my opinion.

During the class when we got our results we were shown some great examples from the presentations. It's hard to find a balance between collaboration and that point where you just have to let one person work alone. The examples were of visuals, clearly done by the one person. You have to find the middle ground where maybe 1 or two people work on the final presentation elements and all the other members make up for this in early stages of the project.

To improve this grade for the nest presentation we have to ensure everything appears to belong together. It should not be clear that each drawing has been done by a different person. This was a primary problem with this presentation. This should be easier to achieve for the next one though, as everything is expected to be computer generated, making consistency more achievable.

Week 7

Interior Charrette

The interior week went quite well I think. Although we didn't come up with any final details or anything of much resolution. But we worked on basics such as colour palette and flooring types. INT1 who was leading the charette did a really great job in bring a significant amount of research along. Recycled materials, suppliers, children friendly activities, display walls, a whole heap of really interesting stuff. INT1 was also not one to posses the qualities of a leader, but it think we all managed to work together and help out so it wasn't such a struggle.

The landscape issue

Our group had a bit of a disadvantage in that we did not have a landscape student. Particularly in our project, landscape is extremely important. There are other projects that would not rely too much on particular disciplines but our project is very architecturally, interior and landscape dependent. As a team we discussed all of us doing the landscape components together. But we predicted that everyone would be preoccupied with their own fields that the landscape would most likely get forgotten about and have the least amount to of time spent on it at the end. Because of this i volunteered to take on the landscaping role. 

How do i feel about this

I think it was the right thing to do for the team. We do not need two people on industrial components and so it would benefit everyone to have one member focussing on landscape which would otherwise be neglected. 

I am quite excited about trying out landscape design, I have always wandered what it would be like. 

I think doing landscape brings less pressure than working on your own discipline. I felt that everyone being separated by disciplines brings a lot of pressure and expectation to make your contributions of a really high standard. There are particular things in my own discipline that I have weaknesses in and so I don't think other members really consider each others weaknesses within their field. I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone with what I produced as an industrial designer so in a way it is a bit of a relief to be doing something new. I am going to learn the basics of a whole other discipline and hopefully pick up some new skills. Being the landscaper for the team, I hope will mean our landscape components will be much stronger than if we failed to have anyone specifically focuses on this area.
